EXECUTIONS IN 2001

During 2001, at least 4,700 people were executed in 34 countries. Executions were carried out in the following countries:
China: at least 3,500, including at least 13 women
Iran: at least 198, including at least 6 women and 1 juvenile
Iraq: at least 179, including at least 1 woman
Kenya: about 100
Tajikistan: about 100
Viet Nam: about 100
Saudi Arabia: 82, including 2 women
Yemen: at least 80
Afghanistan: at least 68, including at least 2 women
United States of America: 66, including 3 women and 1 juvenile
Pakistan: 45, including 1 juvenile
Kazakhstan: 35 (in the first half of the year)
Democratic Republic of the Congo: at least 35 (for exceptional crimes)
