9 months after he confessed to a 2-month robbery spree that ended in the murder of 2 people, David Scott Daniels was formally sentenced to die by lethal injection. "David Scott Daniels shall suffer the death penalty," Sacramento County Superior Court Judge James L. Long said. Daniels was convicted of the Dec. 28, 1999, murder of LeWayne Alan Carolina, 23; the Jan. 2, 2000, auto death of LaTanya Janelle McCoy, 24. In a jailhouse interview in May, Daniels admitted he committed all the crimes and wanted to be sentenced immediately. In December, Daniels fired his lawyers and, acting as his own attorney, pleaded guilty to more than a dozen robbery charges, but the law still prevented him from pleading guilty to those charges carrying the death penalty. In less than 2 weeks and without putting on any defence, Daniels was found guilty of the killings and given a preliminary death sentence by Long following a non-jury trial.
