A 19-year-old, named only as Ahmed A was sentenced to death in Jordan after killing a 40-year-old German woman in September 2003 and then having sex with her corpse before stealing her money, the Jordan Times newspaper said the defendant started crying when the Criminal Court in Aqaba passed sentence. When Ahmed returned to his village in the Irbid region, north of Amman, his family became suspicious over the money he had suddenly acquired and a mobile telephone he had bought, the newspaper said. The family questioned him and, when he confessed what he had done, handed him over to the authorities. According to court papers, the defendant had gone to sleep in an empty apartment when he saw the woman, a professor at Jordan University of Science and Technology, asleep on a couch in her nearby flat. He went in to look for money. "While he was attempting to leave, the woman woke up and started screaming, scaring the defendant who slit her throat, then sexually assaulted her after she was dead," the court said. The newspaper did not give the name of the victim.
