A 20-year-old man, Aliyu Ibrahim, from Adamawa State, who claimed to have blasphemed against the Prophet Muhammad has taken himself to the Upper Sharia Court Two, Sokoto, asking for the death penalty, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported.
A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto reported that Ibrahim, who is a disabled man from Nasarawa area of Jimeta Local Government Area of Adamawa State told newsmen in Sokoto that: "I came to Sokoto to be prosecuted under the Islamic Law."
According to him: "I blasphemed against the Prophet in my mind and I was neither in any bad condition nor facing any predicament and was not forced by anybody to commit the offence."
He added: "Now, I want to be sentenced to death, because my blasphemy still irritates me and if I died without prosecution under Islamic Law, I will die as an infidel."
Ibrahim was said to be an old boy of Dubeli Government Secondary School in Adamawa State and that his relatives were not aware of his trip to Sokoto.
NAN, however, reports that the judge, Alhaji Bawa Sahabi Tambuwal, has ordered the examination of Ibrahim's mental condition at a nearby hospital.
