A bank director was sentenced to death by a court in south China for embezzling 21.76 million yuan (2.6 million U.S. dollars) to pay his gambling debts in Macao.
Guan Youren, director of the Shaoguan Branch of the Guangdong Development Bank, also had his property confiscated and his political rights stripped for life.
The Intermediate People's Court in Shaoguan, south China's Guangdong Province, found that between February and September of 2000, huge amounts of the bank's money were transferred, on Guan's orders, to companies in Zhuhai and Dongguan, near Macao. The two firms have no business connections with the bank in Shenzhen, the court said.
The money was converted into Hong Kong dollars and re-sent to Macao, where Guan used it for gambling.
Guan also embezzled public funds by illegal manipulation and falsification of accounts, according to the court.
