A Briton on death row will learn today if the US Supreme Court will give him a final appeal.
More than 100 MPs have backed calls for Tracy Housel's case to be heard again and the Foreign Office has called for his sentence to be commuted to life.
But his lawyers say only a personal phone call from the PM or Foreign Secretary can guarantee his life.
Lawyer Robert McGlasson told them: "Pick up the phone and save a life."
The 43-year-old, born in British territory Bermuda, claims he was insane when he raped and murdered a man in Texas 16 years ago. He is likely to be executed in three weeks.
A statement by the Foreign Office read: "Her Majesty's Government is opposed to the imposition of the death penalty in all circumstances. It is our policy to always make representations against the use of the death penalty and its imposition on British Nationals. We will continue to do so in Tracy Housel's case. We very much hope that he will not be executed."
