A Briton was sentenced to death by the High Court in Malaysia's northern state of Pulau Pinang for trafficking 189.86 grams of heroin. David Anthony Chell, 57, was charged under Section 39B (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death sentence on conviction. During the trial the defence said the main prosecution witness, a policeman, had changed details of his evidence during cross-examination, and accused police of planting the drugs. A key page in a police station's arrest log for the day when Chell was arrested had been ripped out, the defence also said.
