A court in the central Chinese province of Hunan handed down the death sentence to a female manager found guilty of large-scale corruption.
The court in Changsha, the provincial capital of Hunan Province, condemned Jiang Yanping to death for having accepted over 10 million yuan (1.2 million US dollars) in bribes.
Jiang, a former deputy general manager of the Provincial Architectural Engineering Group of Hunan, was found guilty of having taken numerous bribes "from individuals and groups who came to seek help in business or personal matters" between 1995 and 1999.
She was also found guilty of having illicitly obtained over 734,000 yuan (nearly 90,000 US dollars) of public money between 1994 and 1996 by making false receipts and payments.
The court ruling said that "as the former leader of a state-owned enterprise, Jiang severely destroyed the normal working order of the enterprise, and undermined the reputation of the enterprise's leaders."
