a Criminal Court in Amman, Jordan, sentenced a 21-year-old man to death after finding him guilty of murdering his mother and attempting to kill his siblings and grandmother in Zarqa on March 6. The court convicted the defendant on one count of murder and five counts of attempted murder. Court papers said the defendant had wanted to marry a woman but his mother opposed the marriage for financial reasons. “The defendant became enraged and decided to take revenge by murdering his family,” court papers added. One day before the incident, the court said, the defendant bought a poisonous substance, which he mixed with lemon juice and served to his family the next day. Sunday’s verdict will automatically be reviewed by the Cassation Court within the next 30 days. There are currently 94 individuals, including seven women, on death row in Jordan.
