A full 61 percent of Colombians favour bringing back the death penalty as a means of combating violence, a poll revealed.
Radio Cadena Nacional (RCN) radio network conducted the poll in 36 cities and over the Internet, and obtained responses from 1,777 Colombians.
Senator Vicente Blel of the Liberal Party announced several legislators would introduce a bill to put the death penalty on the ballot of a referendum scheduled for 2003.
The measure, Blel said, "seeks to end impunity by punishing the criminality that prevails throughout the country."
Colombia abolished the death penalty in 1910.
In the poll, 61.4 percent of respondents said they favour the death penalty, 34.8 oppose it and almost 4 percent do not know or did not answer.
