It will be Daniel Ramsey's 2nd trip to death row in the 1996 shootings that killed 2 young girls and wounded his former girlfriend and 2 toddlers.
The 29-year-old Ramsey was convicted for murder and sentenced to death a year after the murders. But in 2000, the Illinois Supreme Court overturned his conviction and ordered a new trial after ruling he used an insanity defense that was unconstitutional.
Ramsey pleaded guilty April 25 to charges that he raped and killed his friend, 16-year-old Laura Marson, after they argued about his failed relationship with then-17-year-old Rachel Sloop. Prosecutors say he then went to Sloop's home where he wounded Sloop and 2 toddlers who were staying there and killed his former girlfriend's 12-year-old sister, Lonna Sloop.
Judge Steven Bordner set a July 31 execution date.
