A Gallup Poll taken in February, 1999, found that 71% of those surveyed favored the death penalty for someone convicted of murder, while only 22% were against it. This was the lowest level of support in 13 years. Recent polls, moreover, have shown that public support for the death penalty drops to below 50 percent when voters are offered alternative sentences. More people would support life without parole plus restitution to the victim's family than would choose the death penalty.
