A group of about 30 women staged a protest outside the courtroom in Russia's southern republic of Dagestan where Chechen warlord Salman Raduyev and three others were being tried on terrorist charges, Russia TV reported.
It said that the women, who blocked traffic on the square outside the court, demanded the death sentence or life imprisonment for Raduyev.
"They said the Dagestani court was certain either to let Raduyev go or pass a fairly lenient sentence on him," the TV said.
Speaking to reporters during a break in proceedings, Prosecutor-General Vladimir Ustinov, who is leading the prosecution team, denied that the court would be "unfair", as alleged by the protesters.
