A group of legislators from the opposition People First Party (PFP) suggested that the law enforcement authorities prescribe capital punishment for "snakehead" ringleaders to stem human trafficking across the Taiwan Strait. At a public hearing on the issue of the increasingly rampant cross-strait human trafficking, PFP Legislator Tsao Yuan-jhang said the crimes committed by the leaders of human trafficking rings are so heinous that only capital punishment would help bring justice to their victims and to the nation. To safeguard Taiwan's national security and social order, Tsao said he suggested that cross-strait human trafficking ringleaders be given the death penalty or at least life imprisonment, in addition to a fine of over NT$10 million (US$293,255).
