A Herald-DigiPoll survey of 400 people in New Zealand showed the majority support the death penalty if Saddam Hussein is found guilty of the murders attributed to his regime. Over 300,000 people are believed to have been killed during the former Iraq president's 23-year reign, including 5000 Kurds when chemical weapons were used in 1988 on Halabja. The findings come after US President George W. Bush said Iraqis would have the decision to execute Saddam, and that the US and Iraq would organise a fair and public trial for the 66-year-old. Members of a US-appointed Iraq Governing Council have said they want him executed within six months.
