A major new campaign called "Life for a Life," launched on July 22, would substitute a life without parole sentence for the death penalty in Oregon. The campaign is being chaired by former U.S. Senator Mark Hatfield and is working to put an initiative on the state ballot in 2000 to eliminate the death penalty. Oregon had no executions in 1999 or 1998.
