A majority of Czechs or 56

A majority of Czechs or 56.1 percent say yes to the re-establishment of capital punishment in the Czech Republic, according to the June poll results released by the Central European Opinion Research Group (CEORG) in Brussels. A majority of Hungarians (59.8 percent) and Poles (73.6) are also for the re-establishment of capital punishment, according to the poll. In the former communist countries situated off Central Europe, mostly Russians (78.7 percent), Lithuanians (73.3 percent) and Bulgarians (68 percent) long for the renewal of executions. According to the poll results, 74.1 of Czechs feel more or less safe at their place of residence, while in Hungary the same feeling is shared by 73.7 percent and in Poland by 72.1 percent of people. However, the safe feeling in the country as a whole is considered lower. In the Czech Republic 45.1 percent of people feel safe, in Hungary 52 percent and in Poland 37.8 percent of respondents, according to the CEORG poll. The Czech Republic has a top position in the number of inhabitants contented with police work at the place of residence. According to the poll, 65.1 percent of the Czechs are very or rather contented. In Poland it is 63.3 percent, and in Hungary only 57 percent. However, the results of the poll concerning the police work in the whole country vary much more. In this case, 43 percent of Czechs are contented, 32.2 of Hungarians and 59.4 of Poles. In each country (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland) between 1,060 and 1,509 respondents participated in the poll carried out by CEORG partner organisations, in the Czech Republic by the Centre for the Research of Public Opinion. In 2001 the Centre came to the conclusion that the number of capital punishment supporters in the Czech Republic was dropping. While in 1992 three fourths of respondents were for capital punishment, in 2001 it was only 59 percent.
