A poll showed that nearly a third of adult New Zealanders want the death penalty back

A poll showed that nearly a third of adult New Zealanders want the death penalty back. The One News Colmar Brunton poll found 28 percent of those questioned wanted death as a sentencing option. The poll found 67 percent did not want the death penalty option and 5 percent did not know. Justice Minister Phil Goff said the justice system could not guarantee it would always convict the right person all of the time. ``To take the life of an innocent person is the worst thing that a state can do to its citizens,'' he told One News. The poll of 1000 voters had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percent.
