A professor of criminology at the Indonesia University in Jakarta, Professor Dr. Tubagus Ronny Rahman Nitibaskara said the death sentence had to be preserved in support of a public sense of justice. It should be especially effective in fighting the narcotic problem and drug trafficking, said Ronny, a member of the Public Considerations Agency. In relation to the fight against drug traffickers, President KH Abdurrahman Wahid requested the Justice Department and Law to revise Law 5/1997 and Law 22/1997 into tougher rules for drug traffickers. Vice President Megawati Soekarnoputri also supported capital punishment for drug traffickers.
