Judge Roger A. Leubs acknowledged that Luther had a troubled childhood influenced by his father's criminal behavior, but saw no reason to reduce the sentence recommended by the jury.
Johnathon Ross Luther was convicted Feb. 2 of murdering Brian Jacques, 74, on Jan. 2, 2003.
In 2003, Luther admitted to the killing, first telling police that he believed Jacques was "releasing some kind of evil" and later saying he shot the professor because of a conflict Jacques had with Luther's grandfather, who lived nearby.
