A Sokoto [northern Nigeria] Upper Shari'ah Court ordered the amputation of the right hand of a middle-aged man, Bello Garba for stealing a donkey valued at 2,500 naira [21dollars].
Mohammed Bello Gwadawa, the judge of Shari'ah Court found Garba guilty of stealing the donkey at Tungar Halilu Village on 14 January.
He said the offence was contrary to Section 147 of the Sokoto State Shari'ah penal code, however he gave the convict 30 days within which to appeal against the judgment if he was not satisfied.
