a St Vincentian man, who beheaded a woman in broad daylight in December 2006, was sentenced to death by the High Court. Justice Frederick Bruce Lyle said the death penalty was the "only appropriate punishment" for Shorn Samuel, 35, who attacked 21-year-old Stacy Wilson at a bus terminal in Kingstown on December 11, 2006. Hundreds of commuters watched in horror as Samuel hacked Wilson to death. Samuel was convicted on October 15, 2008 for what the Judge also described as an "extremely brutal attack". Defence counsel Stephen Williams said that his client was suffering from a physiological disorder which was partly triggered by his usage of marijuana from a tender age. He argued against the death penalty, saying while it would appease public sentiment, it was not necessary for justice to be done.
