A state senator from New York wants to give people the power to decide whether someone who murders them should face the death penalty.
Thomas Duane has introduced a bill that would create a state "death penalty objector registry," the New York Post said. Under the law, state residents over 18 could add their names to a list stating that if they are murdered, they want their killers to be spared the death penalty.
Prosecutors would be required to check the registry after every murder. If the victim's name is on it, they would be barred from seeking a death sentence.
