A survey organised by the Estonian Church Council, Estonian Gospel Alliance and Estonian Bible Society and handled by letter among 1,700 respondents, showed that 57 percent of the respondents in a poll on religious attitudes said they favoured capital punishment while 8 percent were firmly opposed to it. A third of the respondents did not have a firm position on the issue. Compared to a similar survey made in 1995, the number of supporters of capital punishment has fallen by 4 percent. Forty-two percent of Estonian believers and 56 percent of non-Estonian believers supported the death penalty. Among the non-religious residents, capital punishment was even more popular: 65 percent of Estonians and 70 percent of non-Estonians said they favoured the death penalty.
