A Yemeni man, Jahwi Hussein Qasim Abubakr, escaped execution by the sword in Saudi Arabia when his victim's father stood up at the last minute and forgave him.
A crowd gathered in the Saudi capital Riyadh to watch the execution of the 20-year-old convicted of killing Saud ibn Daghaileeb Al-Markouzi Al-Buqami. As the executioner raised his sword, Saud's father stood up suddenly and declared: "I have pardoned him, seeking the pleasure of Allah."
The amazed crowd chanted praise for the father's magnanimity, leaving Abubakr - whose eyes were covered - to prostrate himself, praising God for his new lease of life. It was thought that he would go free and be deported.
Under Islamic law, the family of a murder victim may waive a death sentence.
