According to an official report, most of the 69 people who died in the April riots at the El Porvenir prison were "executed" by Honduran police guards or soldiers after the mutiny had been brought under control. Honduran radio stations said the report established that of the 69 people who died in the disturbances 47 were struck by police-issue bullets. "That means 72.8 percent of the prisoners were executed in cold-blood," Radio America said. The report by Honduran state prosecutors said the riot began as a clash between the members of the Mara 18 street gang serving their sentences at the Porvenir facility located near the Caribbean port of La Ceiba. There was no sign of the four pistols and a hand grenade that police claimed the rioters had in their possession and that they used to justify opening fire on them. Army troops called as reinforcements also fired on the rioters. The El Porvenir prison farm was built to hold 200 inmates with a maximum capacity of 300, at the time of the riot 555 prisoners were crowded into the institution.
