According to reports from Bratislava Slovakia witnessed an increase in crime rates. Statistics released by the Interior Ministry indicated that 94,000 criminal cases were reported in 1999, or 258 cases a day on average and that serious crimes such as violence and murders hit a record high. Authorities said that inefficiency in crime crackdown was the basic cause of the worsening situation and that the revocation of death penalties had weakened the legal system's ability to deter offenders.
