Afghanistan's ruling Taleban movement publicly executed Ahmad Zaki and Gul Ahmad. The two men were accused of working with opposition forces and carrying out bomb attacks in the capital Kabul. The two men in their late 30s were blindfolded and had their hands tied behind their backs before being hung by the neck from ropes attached to two separate cranes. Hundreds of Taleban guards and several journalists saw both men die in a matter of seconds when the cranes lifted them up. The bodies of the two men remained on the cranes all day as part of Taleban's policy to deter others. The execution warrant was issued by a military tribunal with the approval of Taleban's supreme leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar.
