After 14 years on death row, Edward Leroy Harris was ordered to serve 3 life sentences. Jefferson County Circuirt Court Judge Duane Slone signed a consent order taking Edward Leroy Harris, 46, off death row because of his mental illness.
The Tennessee Supreme Court ruled in December that executing mentally retarded individuals is cruel and unusual punishment prohibited by both the federal and state constitutions.
Harris was convicted in 1988 for the deaths of Melissa Hill and Troy Dale Valentine in 1986.
Under Slone's order, Harris will have to serve three consecutive life sentences, meaning he will have serve at least 75 years before being eligible for parole.
