Akbar Mohammadi and Ahmad Batebi, accused of involvement in the 1999 student demonstrations, had their sentences approved by the Supreme Court. Mohammadi was sentenced to death, and Batebi to 10 years in goal after a closed-door court session. Batebi's major offence was that he had shown the bloody shirt of a fellow student to reporters.
