an Egyptian appellate court has decided to review the case of Ali Darman Agustri, an Indonesian citizen, who had been sentenced to death.
In its trial session in Cairo the appellate court decided to review the death sentence on Ali Darman, spokesman for the Indonesian embassy in Cairo Seudarmawan said.
The Indonesian embassy learnt about the court`s decision from Ali Darman`s lawyer after the trial session.
"No representative of the Indonesian embassy attended the trial session, because we just have received a notification from Ali`s lawyer," Sudarman who is in charge of handling Ali`s case said.
Ali`s lawyer, Amr Ahmed Abdel Hamed Yousef, an Egyptian, could not as yet be contacted for confirmation of the death sentence review.
Previously, a court of first instance in Abbasea, Cairo, on April 6, 2005 sentenced Ali Darman to death for murdering all members of a Malaysian family in Egypt, comprising the husband, wife and their two children.
The death sentence was handed down on Ali only following an approval from Egyptian Mufti Prof Dr Syeikh Aly Goumah.
In the previous trial sessions, Darman always pleaded guilty.
Ali Darman (35) is now held in a special jail in Mudiriyah, in Attaba district, in the centre of Cairo, where all the inmates are in death row.
”Alhamdulillah (thank God), the decision is as we expected. At least Ali Darman has a chance to avoid the gallows”, said Muzammil Basyuni, younger brother of Religious Minister Maftuh Basyuni.
