Alleged Bali bomber, Amrozi Nurhasyim is prepared to face the death penalty. "I am prepared for the worst," said Amrozi, dubbed the Smiling Bomber, when responding to questions posed by The Malay Mail through his lawyer, A. Wirawan Adnan. On July 1, Indonesian prosecutors called for the death sentence on Amrozi, who said he was sure the Indonesian law would find him guilty. "But I am not afraid of this. I have prepared myself for jihad," he said, adding that he was prepared to face man-made laws. "I am not afraid because it is not God's law. The real trial for me and the sentencing will only be on Judgment Day." Amrozi is charged with planning and carrying out terrorist attacks and crimes against humanity, under the new Indonesian anti-terrorist law. If convicted, he will face the death sentence by a firing squad. Prosecutor Urip Tri Gunawan, in his 228-page closing statement, told a panel of five judges that Amrozi had "enacted extraordinary crimes, mass killings, terror, reducing people's freedoms and inhumanity". Recapping the evidence from 55 police witnesses, as well as testimony from experts and three Australians, he demanded for the death sentence. Amrozi could face a firing squad before the year's end. But, he has the right to appeal to two higher courts, and if all fails, his last avenue would be to ask President Megawati Sukarnoputri for clemency.
