Also in September, Maj. Gen. Hadiman, Chairman of the Social Coordinating Body for Noble Citizen Development (Bersama = an anti-narcotics campaigning body), speaking during a workshop on campaigning against narcotics participated in by representatives of all ASEAN member states, said the current government will uphold the decision, made by the New Order regime, regarding the death sentences on the eight convicts of narcotics cases. Their request for clemency was rejected by former President Suharto when he was still in power. Of the eight convicts, one is under sentence in the North Sumatra city of Medan, one in a prison of the East Kalimantan town of Balikpapan, and four are incarcerated in Jakarta. Airing a similar view, Bersama Secretary Tanjung said Justice Minister Muladi may forget to carry out the legal decision on the eight convicts but he refused to mention the convicts' names.
