Amid mounting international pressure to spare the Nigerian woman Safiya Hussaini, from death by stoning, Amnesty International presented 300,000 more signatures condemning her sentence to the Nigerian Embassy in Madrid.
Nigeria's Ambassador to Spain, Samuel Otuyelu, said in an interview with the director of Amnesty International, Esteban Beltran, that "to prevent the death of a person is to contribute to peace and the development of peoples," but he added that he could not promise that his government could prevent Hussaini's execution. In October 2001, an Islamic court ruled that Hussaini should be stoned to death for committing adultery with a married neighbour.
Beltran said that while the Nigerian government's statements were important, they were insufficient and that more international pressure was needed to protect Hussaini. Beltran added that the Nigerian government should revoke laws that violate international and human rights because Hussaini's case is not the only one.
