Amnesty International leader Pierre Sane renewed the group's call for Japan to abolish the death penalty and also criticized the country's treatment of death-row inmates. "Revenge is not what justice is all about... No government should teach its people that it is OK to kill in order to teach people that killing is wrong," he said. Sane accused Japanese prison authorities of a lack of "decency" in their handling of death-row inmates and dealing with the prisoners' families.
