Amnesty International said that if Portugal extradited Indian gangster Abu Salem, who is accused of masterminding bombings in Bombay that killed nearly 300 people, it would violate the Portuguese constitution. Extraditing Abu Salem would be "a veritable violation of the Portuguese constitution," said Teresa Nogueira, Amnesty's Portugal representative. Any promise from India that it would refrain from sentencing Salem to either death, or life-long imprisonment could not be trusted, Nogueira added. "There are countless cases where the authorities promise not to carry out the death sentence, and the person extradited still ends up on death row," she said.
