Amos King, who was scheduled for execution on January 24, was granted a stay of execution by the U.S. Supreme Court. He previously survived 2 death warrants for the rape and murder of Natalie "Tillie" Brady on March 17, 1977.
The Court granted the reprieve in light of its decision earlier this month to hear Ring v. Arizona to determine the constitutionality of having a judge, rather than a jury, decide the sentence in a death penalty case. In Florida, a trial judge has the power to impose a death sentence, even if the jury recommends a life sentence. If the Court rules that Arizona's law is unconstitutional, it could effect the death penalty laws in Florida and seven other states.
