An Aborigine elder is seeking the permission of Australia's highest court to have a police officer killed with a spear for putting out a sacred fire.
Darren Bloomfield claimed that Det Supt Brian Hepworth incurred the death penalty under Aborigine law by desecrating the fire at a ceremony in July 2001. He also alleged that the officer tried to run over him in a police car.
The incident happened when police took action during a fire ceremony at the Aborigine tent embassy on the lawns of Old Parliament House in Canberra, established to highlight Aborigine land claims and the push for a treaty with white Australia.
Bloomfield said in High Court documents that Det Supt Hepworth, of the Federal Police, should be "tried under white law and then handed over to us under our law where he would be speared to death".
The case is due to be heard on March 22.
