An alleged ringleader of the October 12 Bali bombings would welcome capital punishment for the crime because he considers it a martyr's death, one his lawyers said.
Achmad Midan, who is representing key suspect Imam Samudra, said his client had asked him what his punishment would likely be for his role in the bombings that killed nearly 200 people, mostly Western tourists.
Midan told Samudra it would probably be death. "I'd be happy to get that,'' Midan quoted Samudra as saying. "I'm ready to die as a martyr.''
Samudra has confessed to planning and executing the Bali bombings, police said. He has told investigators he carried out the attacks to avenge the deaths of Muslims elsewhere in the world.
He has not yet been charged with any crime. However, he was arrested under emergency anti-terror legislation rushed through after the blasts that stipulate death by firing squad for any one proven guilty of terrorist crimes.
