An express bus driver was sentenced to death by a Malaysian High Court for murdering a computer engineer on October 7, 2000

An express bus driver was sentenced to death by a Malaysian High Court for murdering a computer engineer on October 7, 2000.
The bus driver, Hanafi Mat Hassan, 34, was also sentenced to 20 years' jail and ordered to be given 12 strokes of the rotan for raping the engineer, Noor Suzaily Mukhtar, 24.
Justice Datuk Hishamuddin Mohamed Yunos directed the jail term to commence from October 10, 2000, the day Hanafi was arrested. He also ordered the sentences to run concurrently but with the death sentence being given priority in line with Section 277 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
In convicting Hanafi, Justice Hishamuddin said that he was satisfied that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Hanafi was charged with murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code which carries the mandatory death sentence on conviction and with rape under Section 376 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping.
