An Indonesian maid, identified as Sundarti Supriyanto, 23, from the East Java district of Magetan, is facing the death penalty in Singapore on charges of murdering two Singaporeans and committing arson in the island state.
Singaporean criminal investigators alleged that Sundarti killed NG Wee Pee Angie, 34, and Poh Si Qi, 3, on May 28, in a fight. The investigation determined that during the fight NG Wee Pee Angie threw a knife to hit Sundarti but it struck Poh Si Qi and unexpectedly killed the child. The fight then continued until Angie was killed. To cover up the killings, Sundarti went out to buy gasoline to burn down the house, investigators said.
"The case will be brought to court in Singapore on November 19. For her trial, Sundarti will be accompanied by two lawyers from Singapore. She is being detained at Changi prison," an Indonesian senior diplomat in Singapore, Renvyyannis Gazali, said.
According to the Indonesian Embassy's records six Indonesian housemaids have faced the death penalty in Singapore since 1999, but due to professional legal attorneys appointed to them, they were sentenced to a maximum of eight years in jail each.
Some 70,000 Indonesians are now in Singapore and 90 percent of them work as housemaids with monthly salaries ranging between Rp 1.2 million (S$236.31) and Rp 2.5 million (S$492.31).
