An Iranian woman convicted of the murder of her sister-in-law was executed by hanging in the northwestern city of Tabriz, the Qods newspaper said, according to AFP.
The paper said the woman, identified as Nasrine C, was executed at dawn inside the city's jail, according to Sharia law introduced in Iran following the 1979 revolution.
Under the law, relatives of the victim can pardon a criminal by either demanding blood money, currently fixed at 150 million rials (18,750 dollars) for a man and half that for a woman. Relatives can also pardon a criminal "to please God".
Meanwhile, an Iranian opposition group in exile denounced what it said was a recent "wave of executions" in the Islamic Republic and called upon the European Union to support a UN resolution condemning alleged rights abuses by the Islamic regime.
