An Islamic court told Safiya Hussaini, who was sentenced to die after being found guilty of adultery, that her life will be spared if she can prove her daughter Adama, who is now almost a year old, was the result of rape.
If Safiya is unable to prove her innocence, she will be buried up to her shoulders. Then she will be stoned to death.
Adama was conceived when Safiya had sex with Yakubu Abubakar, 60. Safiya's father ordered Abubakar, who already had two wives, to marry his daughter or provide for the child. In order to escape his obligations, the man is said to have taken the matter to the police.
