An NGO based in Abuja, the Multmedia Centre for Democracy, decried the death sentence passed on Safiya Hussaini in Sokoto state.
"We still shudder at the prospect of stoning a nursing mother to death, in 21st century Nigeria, because she was found guilty of committing adultery by a Sharia court in Sokoto state. No! A human life should not be wasted in this manner. Let Safiya Hussaini live!" Chris Anyanwu wrote on This Day.
"We respect the right of people to their religion. Also, we respect the right of people to live. Human life is sacred and indeed should come before any other consideration.
"In this regard, we see Safiya's condemnation to death by stoning as a negation of the very purpose of human life. Safiya is entitled to her fundamental human rights among which are the right to life and freedom of choice. To carry out such an action in a civilised and multi-religious Nigeria, will be doing irredeemable damage to the image of Nigeria.
"We particularly call on the government of Sokoto State to reverse this judgement. This is not about politics, monopoly of knowledge or ego. It is all about human life. We make this call based on our joint humanity. We are all joined together in one long chain of life. Today, it is Safiya, tomorrow it could be our wives, mothers or sisters."
