Apisai Tora, a leading Fiji Government senator, called for sex offenders to be stoned to death or castrated and banished. Tora made the comment during debate in the Senate on a crimes bill, the Fiji Times reported. "What I have in mind are penalties that will prevent the offence literally before the spark even develops into a thought. My religion has the most effective deterrents for sexually related offences. The first I propose is death by stoning. I propose that offenders of the most grievous sexually related offences such as paedophilia and incest be stoned to death. The second penalty is castration. I propose that offenders of other sexually related offences such as rape and defilement be castrated and sent away to some remote atoll," Tora was reported as saying.
