Armenian President Kocharian signed a new Criminal Code, which had been approved by the National Assembly on April 18, and the law on enactment of the new Criminal Code starting from August 1, 2003

Armenian President Kocharian signed a new Criminal Code, which had been approved by the National Assembly on April 18, and the law on enactment of the new Criminal Code starting from August 1, 2003. Adoption of the new Criminal Code was one of Armenia's commitments to the Council of Europe and stipulated the replacement of death penalty by life imprisonment. The code would not cover those who committed murders with aggravation before the enactment of the law.
