At least 155 people are listed as having been executed between 1984 and 1993, when democracy returned to the former British colony after Jerry Rawlings was elected as president, and was said to have headed an iron fisted military government. Many of those executed were soldiers suspected of coup plotting. Rawlings stepped down early in 2001 after serving the two terms he was allowed under the constitution, winning plaudits as a rare African president willing to relinquish power without fuss.
