At the 56th session of the Commission on Human Rights, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Juan Matutes, stated that the right to life was something which could not be renounced. He said that Spanish society had openly opposed the death penalty and his Government had been steadfast in supporting efforts to achieve the universal abolition of capital punishment and, in the interim, the application of a moratorium on its execution.
