Adelaide supporters of Nguyen Tuong Van, an Australian man on death row in Singapore, held a lunchtime rally to voice their opposition to the death penalty. About 30 people sat on the steps of Parliament House to show support for Nguyen, 25, who was facing execution for attempting to traffic heroin in 2002. Amnesty International branch president Vicki Jacobs said campaigners still hoped the Singapore Government could be persuaded to grant him clemency.
"What we're hoping to achieve is to get as many signatures as possible that we can send to the President of Singapore, requesting that he commute the death sentence for Van Nguyen," she said.
