Australian Prime Minister John Howard said his close relations with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono would not necessarily give the Bali Nine ringleaders an easy route out of death row. Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were condemned to death on February 14 by a Bali court for trying to smuggle heroin from Indonesia to Australia. "When it comes to the crunch his obligation to his own people and to the strength of the domestic campaign against drugs is far greater and more important than his closeness to and his friendship with me," he said.
